Cobb up for top award
Thursday, 13th November 2008
County batsman Josh Cobb has been nominated for a BBC East Midlands Sport Award for 2008.
The 18-year-old is up for the Brian Clough Breakthrough Award, and will compete alongside two other city sportsmen for the honour as Leicester City left-back Joe Mattock and boxer Rendall Munroe are also on the shortlist.
The final decision will be made on Thursday, November 27 at the ceremony hosted by BBC frontman John Inverdale at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham.
Cobb has gained recognition for the award by becoming a permanent fixture in the County batting line-up in the second half of the season after finishing his studies at Oakham School.
The teenager became the youngest ever centurion for Leicestershire when making a brilliant unbeaten 148 against Middlesex at Lord’s, and went on to top the Championship averages, scoring 419 runs at 59.85.
His leg breaks also proved useful - as did his agile fielding - but it was his impressive batting form which led him to gaining international recognition during the course of 2008.
Cobb was named in the England under-19s party to tour South Africa early next year, and will join up with the touring party after completing a stint at the Darren Lehmann Academy in Adelaide.
It has certainly been all go for the youngster after making the breakthrough into the County first team, and the nomination at the sixth annual awards evening hosted by the BBC in the region has been duly deserved.
Winners will be chosen by a panel of judges including former England footballer Dave Watson, paralympic tennis player Jayant Mistry, Nottingham Evening Post sports editor Dave Parkinson and the director of sport at Lincoln University, Robin Wright.
Cobb will clearly be in good company at the event, which includes nominations from the Beijing Olympics in Rebecca Adlington and Sam Hynd, as well as other international stars such as England seamer Ryan Sidebottom.
